DE BEERS GROUP DESIGNERS INITIATIVE HOLD 2018 WORKSHOPS AT UNIVERSITIES THROUGHOUT BOTSWANA, NAMIBIA AND SOUTH AFRICA,

As a build up to the 2018/19 De Beers Group Design Initiative, Students were invited to attend workshops at various universities in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia, where they we given the opportunity to learn more about the diamond pipeline in Southern Africa.

The workshops are one of the many initiatives that the De Beers Group Design Initiative team will be embarking on to ensure that the students who are chosen as finalists in the Shining Light Awards competition are also able to play a role in Southern African Diamond jewellery industry

The students were given an in-depth overview of De Beers Group global operations with specific emphasis on the various beneficiation activities that De Beers Group is involved in across the region.

The workshops ended with a presentation on the retail side of the diamond business, followed by a talk by an award winning top designer, on the relationship between clothing fashion and diamond jewellery giving all prospective entrants a good idea of what is expected when designing their collections for the competition.

Once again, it’s time to pay homage to the wealth of design talent that exists in Botswana, Namibia and South Africa, and for the first time in Canada, by creating a design platform through which the creative artistry can be showcased using nature’s most remarkable and finest creation: the Forevermark diamond.

THE DESIGN BRIEF:

  1. The designer must be Inspired by the theme of  “Heroines & Heritage”
     
  2. The design should be the inspiration for a diffusion line collection consisting of:
    1. One solitaire ring (with or without pavé on shank)
    2. One set of earrings (with or without pavé)
    3. One pendant  (with or without pavé)
    4. One bracelet or bangle (not both - with or without pavé)
    5. Name of the collection with a brief description (less than 150 words)
