Shining Light Awards 2012/2013 – Design Workshops.

Topics to be presented

• The History of Diamonds Presentation:  A brief overview of diamonds and the role they have played from the first discovery in India in the 4th century up to the present day.
• Mining and Recovery Presentation: The various ways that diamonds are mined and recovered from the earth, riverbeds and sea with modern day equipment.
• Crystallography Presentation: All about the formation and crystal structure of diamonds and how it links to manufacturing methods.  It also explains the properties that make industrial diamonds so sought after, and gem qualities so very valuable!  (A very detailed, slightly scientific version is available, or alternatively a high-level approach. The presentation can be concluded with a series of grain marking exercises to fully understand structure.)
• Colour and Inclusions Presentation: This presentation looks at the various colours and inclusions that are found in diamonds, and the causes behind all these “impurities”.
• The Diamond Pipeline Presentation: It is an extensive presentation that covers from prospecting for new mines, takes us through mining and recovery techniques, the functions of the DTC all the way to manufacturing and retail of diamonds.
• Manufacturing and modern manufacturing methods:  A basic overview of rough to polished concepts, estimation of polished from the rough (high level) and the integration of yields and losses using modern manufacturing equipment and methods.
• The manufacturing on diamond jewellery
• The diamond jewellery retail business
• The relationship between jewellery  design and fashion design
